ANOTHER leading international airport has chosen technology developed in Sheffield for its baggage handling systems.
ZIA International Airport, in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka, has chosen Geo Robson and Co (Conveyors) to supply state of the art friction drive baggage carousels and expand existing systems.

The Darnall firm is supplying the airport with two 88
metre long carousels and refurbishing and extending existing carousels from 66 to 88 metres.

The new carousels are made from modern, lightweight polymers, which reduces the power they use by half and cuts noise. Robson recently hosted a visit and training course for representatives of Bangladesh's Civil Aviation Authority, who will be installing, maintaining and commissioning the system.

The visit included visits to London's Heathrow and Gatwick Airports and Birmingham Airport, to see recent Robson installations.

Robson has been supplying and installing baggage handling and screening equipment at Heathrow since 1983 and has worked on contracts worth more than £10 million for equipment in Terminals 1 to 4.

Earlier this year its engineers worked around the clock to help Heathrow's troubled Terminal 5 development by designing, manufacturing and installing a standby screening system within four weeks to allow flights from other terminals to transfer to Terminal 5.

The company has worked at Gatwick for more than 20 years and last year installed an £8 million system that carries baggage for connecting flights at different terminals across the main airport access road between the main terminal and the British Airways satellite terminal.

Robson has been the main supplier of baggage handling and X-ray screening equipment to Birmingham Airport for more than 20 years.
