Local elections Sheffield 2024: Latest results and find out who was voted in your area as it happens

Key Events

  • Sheffield remains in No Overall Control, Barnsley remains Labour, Rotherham still announcing.
  • Today's local elections are considered the last snapshot of voters' opinion before the next general election - whenever that may be.
  • Nationwide, Labour, Lib Dems, Independent and Green have all made double-digit gains - while the Conservatives have lost over 100 councillors.

Results across the country so far

35 of 107 councils across England have been declared so far.

The top line across the country are the big losses for the Conservatives. 96 council seats lost (117 won) and three councils lost (three more held) does not bode well for Rishi Sunak’s party.

So far, the Conservatives have lost roughly 50 per cent of the seats they’ve been defending.

Not all those Tory losses have been hoovered up by Labour though. At the time of writing, Labour have won 58 new seats (319 total) and taken control of four new councils (two from the Tories, two from No Overall Control - NOC).

Labour have lost Oldham Council to NOC meaning their net council gain in just three.

The Liberal Democrats are up 12 new seats across England (114 total) and the Green Party are up 14 (21 total).

Turning to Rotherham, where Conservatives hold 15 seats to Labour's 32

It’s not just Sheffield that The Star will be covering today, but we’ll also bring you news from Rotherham and Barnsley’s elections. Let’s start with a recap for Rotherham.

In May 2021, Labour retained overall control of Rotherham Council, but lost 16 seats – and the Conservatives won 20 seats to form the main opposition when they previously held none. What state that remains in after today is yet to be seen. In May 2021, Labour retained overall control of Rotherham Council, but lost 16 seats – and the Conservatives won 20 seats to form the main opposition when they previously held none. For a majority, a party will need to win 30 of the 59 seats that make up Rotherham Council.

Currently, Labour holds 32 seats, the Conservatives hold 15, the Liberal Democrats hold four, independents hold seven, and the Independent Conservatives hold two.

It makes it much more traditional a battleground for Conservatives and Labour, compared to to catfight in Sheffield between Labour, Lib Dems and Greens.

The early results for Conservative seats nationwide are not a good omen for Rotherham.

Local Democracy Reporter Dani Andrews writes here about which of Rotherham’s seats are the key battlegrounds this year:

Reporter for The Star Chloe Aslett is in Barnsley today to bring us their election results as well.

In Barnsley, 32 seats are needed for a majority.

In May 2022, Labour retained overall control of the council, but lost three seats. Then, in December 2022, Conservative councillor for Rockingham ward David White defected to Reform UK.

Labour retained its long-standing majority last year despite losing three seats, and currently holds 45 seats.

The Lib Dems are the main opposition, with nine seats, Conservatives hold three, Independents hold three, Reform UK hold one and there is one Barnsley Independent Group seat.

New estimates for when counts will come in

The Press Association has published its own estimates for when the overall results from the three counts for Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham will come in.

Sheffield - 1.30pm

Barnsley - 3pm

Rotherham - 3pm

As useful as these estimates are, there is never any guarantee when a count will come in.

(Edit: Clarified that these are for the overall results - some outlets suggest the earliest results will still be 11.30am)

First ward results due late this morning

The overall result for Sheffield City Council will be around 1.30pm
